Glaslyn Coyote Derby raises money for Jaws of Life

Feb 5, 2020 | 2:00 PM

The third annual Backroad Bounty Coyote Derby is coming up this weekend in support of the Glaslyn Fire and Rescue Department.

Shae Pruden, 30, who organized the derby said in previous years the fundraising derby was known as “the Firefighters Coyote Derby” though was abandoned by the fire department and undertaken by some young men in town.

“Last year we had 26 teams of two enter and participate in the event [and] we raised $6,000,” Pruden said. “The event isn’t just to raise money but also to help do our part in controlling the predator population and put less pressure on our livestock and the deer.”

Pruden is an aspiring firefighter and undertook the project to give money back to the Glaslyn Fire Department. Kelly Pritchett, a member of the fire department also helps Prudent with his fundraising efforts.

Kyle Wells has been a volunteer firefighter for eight years and said the funds raised will be used to purchase new Jaws of Life equipment among other items including suits, gloves and respiratory equipment. The Glaslyn Fire Department serves smaller communities in the area as far as Medstead.

“Our Jaws of Life are about 20 years old. We had a big donation come in from the Northern Reflections History Book, the Chamber of Commerce and this year, with the coyote derby, we’ll be able to upgrade it,” Wells said.

Pruden added hunters can go anywhere they wish to hunt coyote, but the animal must be a same-day kill and must follow all Saskatchewan hunting regulations.

There are cash prizes for coyote weigh-ins, door prizes, refreshments and snacks. Registration is open until Feb. 7 for the Feb. 8 event.

For registration and information or derby rules, contact Shae Pruden (306) 845-8269 or Kelly Pritchett at (306) 441-8461.
