BASAC to host free screening of film The Bystander Moment

Feb 7, 2020 | 9:17 AM

The Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre (BASAC) will host a free screening of the documentary The Bystander Moment this month.

The film aims to raise awareness of the problem of violence against women and domestic violence in society. It will be shown at the Capitol Annex Theatre at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 25.

The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is a partner on the project.

The film examines the causes and consequences of sexual assault.

“[The documentary] looks at sexual violence not just being a women’s issue, but being a men’s issue also,” BASAC Executive Director Amber Stewart said.

She said the issue is not only about looking at how women can avoid becoming victims of violence in a relationship. She said men play a part too, adding if a man is seen being abusive someone needs to say it won’t be tolerated.

Stewart said the film also focuses on the need for society to change the culture around sexual violence, to encourage people to talk about the problem.

“It is encouraging people to use their voice to say: ‘This isn’t ok; you can’t treat people like this, and I am not going to just sit by and watch anymore,'” she said.

A question and answer session will follow the screening.

Stewart hopes the event helps raise awareness about the matter.

“As we know, our province has some of the highest rates of domestic violence in the country,” she said. “That’s why we have such a big focus on prevention education.”

Stewart stressed the importance of increasing awareness of the issue, to help stop the cycle of violence.

If anyone is in need of help they can call BASAC, the 24-hour Crisis Line or Battlefords Interval House women’s shelter.
