Conservation officers seek public assistance involving poached moose near St. Brieux

A calf moose was shot from the roadway nearly seven miles east of St. Brieux.

Humboldt conservation officers received information regarding the shot moose on Feb. 1 and discovered it shot and gutted with the meat taken off. The moose was believed to have been shot that afternoon.

Conservation Officer Kevin Harrison said there was no permission given from the landowner and there was no open season for moose in effect.

“Someone poached this moose and took it illegally,” Harrison told northeastNOW. “Rules are put in place to help protect and manage our wildlife resources. Some people choose to ignore those rules… that’s not fair to our wildlife population.”

Officers recovered some evidence from the scene, although Harrison said they rely on the public’s knowledge for cases such as the moose near St. Brieux.

“It’s tough for us to solve them,” he said. “We encourage [anyone with information] to call in.”

Saskatchewan residents can alert conservation officers regarding, wildlife, fisheries, forestry, or environmental violations by calling their nearest Ministry of Environment Office, visiting Sasktips’ website, or by calling the provincial poacher line at 1-800-667-7561.
