La Ronge RCMP members are reminding motorists of tougher distracted driving penalties that came into effect at the beginning of February.

According to the public service announcement, drivers charged with a first offence will be fined $580 plus four demerits under the Safe Driver Recognition program. Second offences within a year of being convicted of the first will garner a $1,400 ticket, an additional four demerits, and an immediate seven-day vehicle seizure.

Motorists with third offences within the year of the first will be fined $2,100, an additional four demerits, and another seven-day vehicle seizure. Drivers are also expected to pay any towing or impound fees incurred as a result of distracted driving.

As of Feb. 1, RCMP noted distracted driving penalties have more than doubled and repeat offenders will pay significantly more in fines.
