Meadow Lake council proclaims Kin Week and Kin Canada Day

Feb 11, 2020 | 12:22 PM

Meadow Lake Kinsmen sat at the council meeting last night, to witness Mayor Merlin Seymour proclaim both Feb. 16 to 22 as Kin Week in Canada and Feb. 20 as Kin Canada Day in the city.

Chet Rogers, a spokesperson from the local Kinsmen, addressed council to clarify the meaning of their cause.

“[Feb. 20] is all about taking a day to make sure our clubs across Canada are doing something in their community. We’re trying to do an act of kindness,” he said to council. “That day will also be the 100th anniversary for the Kinsmen and Kinettes across Canada.”

The day will receive national recognition through a unanimous flag raising in front of city hall. The flag raising ceremony will lead into Kinsmen Telemiracle fundraiser which turns 44 in the province and 43 in Meadow Lake.

“Total funds, raised I can’t imagine though. A member in our club has [raised] in the millions of dollars just through Telemiracle,” Rogers said.

Telemiracle runs from March 7 and 8. Donations are now being collected at a number of businesses across the city.

“It’s a huge part of our community. I believe, it’s a needed part of our community and something we want to continue doing,” he said. “It’s another great way for us to raise more awareness about Telemiracle and for our clubs.”

The flag raising ceremony will be at 9 a.m. on Feb. 20.
