A James Smith First Nation man involved in a single-vehicle collision in the R.M. of Kinistino will spend a 33-day jail sentence in an impaired driver treatment centre.

Creedon Dipaolo, 23, was given the sentence on Thursday, Feb. 13 in Melfort Provincial Court. He was also given an 18-month driving prohibition and six months probation with conditions such as no alcohol consumption 24 hours prior to entering the treatment centre and continuing to take counselling for treatment after his sentence concludes.

“His liberty is restricted in a custodial sense,” Crown Prosecutor Patrick Durham told northeastNOW. “It was a joint submission the Crown and defence put forward to Judge [Margaret Gordon] that was worked prior to my involvement. It was given a significant amount of thought… she found that it was reasonable and within the range of a suitable sentence.”

Dipaolo previously pled guilty to impaired driving causing bodily harm on Nov. 5, 2019.

RCMP determined two adult men and two adult women were travelling northbound in a half-ton pickup truck before Dipaolo lost control on the gravel road. Police, local fire departments, and emergency medical services responded to the scene north of Kinistino on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m.
