Pinehouse Lake wins all five banners at Northern Lights Junior Games

Students from Pinehouse Lake swept the competition this week at the Northern Lights 2020 Junior Games.

The team took home all five banners from the event, which brought together approximately 300 Grade 6 to 9 students from nearly every school in the division. Students from Pinehouse proved they were among the best at the Games and were awarded banners for the highest overall medal count, athletics, cultural events, fine arts and sportsmanship.

“They worked hard, they were super humble, they helped us clean our school when it needed to be cleaned,” Churchill Community High School Vice-Principal Kristianna Merasty said. “They went above and beyond, so they did deserve all five banners.”

The Games came to an end Friday with a closing ceremony after a week of events, which included King and Queen Trapper events, broomball, basketball, cross-country skiing, jigging and more. Students travelled from communities such as Beauval, Buffalo Narrows, Cumberland House, La Loche, Pinehouse Lake and Sandy Bay, as well as from the Far North.

Merasty believes the Pinehouse team was so successful because of the amount of support they receive, not only at the local school, but from the community. She noted students also showed kindness and humility and that really showed in their behaviour during the week.

As for students from Air Ronge and La Ronge, Merasty said she was proud of how they performed, adding one team came in third in the medal count.

“I think they did fantastic,” she said. “Overall, what I am most proud of is how hard they worked and how well they behaved. I always go for a well-behaved team that represents our community and our school.”

As the Games are held once every two years, Merasty didn’t know yet who would host them in 2022. She did, however, want to thank staff and sponsors for supporting the students throughout the week.
