Eight and a half years.

That’s the sentence the Crown and defence agreed to for Keenan Scott, who previously pled guilty to six counts, including break and enter, aggravated assault, and uttering threats to a police officer after the Crown stayed three other charges.

Crown Prosecutor Jennifer Souter and Defence Lawyer Todd Parlee presented the joint submission to Judge Natasha Crooks in Melfort Court of Queen’s Bench on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Scott was arrested in January 2019 after Tisdale RCMP received a report of an intoxicated suspect going from home to home on Kinistin First Nation and committing assaults. The statement of facts stated the suspect entered four homes.

“These are very serious crimes that Keenan was engaged in,” Souter told northeastNOW. “He did a significant amount of harm to the community. Not just the complainants or the people he assaulted, but the community as a whole that night. The sentence needed to fit the crimes that were committed. Eight and a half years is a very lengthy sentence, but a lengthy sentence was appropriate in the situation.”

Parlee said an appeal to the sentence is unlikely, as it’s unusual for an accused to file an appeal if they participated through their lawyer in a joint submission.
