Trojans end regular season with loss to Blazers, looking ahead to playoffs

Feb 23, 2020 | 9:08 AM

The Tisdale Trojans ended their regular season with a loss on Saturday to the Saskatoon Blazers, a 3-1 decision.

However, the result didn’t change anything in the standings as the Trojans and Blazers were already set to meet in the first round. Saturday’s affair was a chance to make sure things were polished for round one, and to send a message to their opponents.

The Blazers sent the first message five minutes into the game, Tyson Wouters scored on a scramble in front to open the scoring. Then with under nine to play in the first, Alec Saretzky made it 2-0 on a wicked wrist shot. Trojans Head Coach Dennis Kubat said ultimately, a ‘not-so-great’ first period was the difference in the game.

“When you spot good teams – that don’t allow many goals to begin with – and you spot them two goals in the first period, it’s tough to come back,” Kubat said. “And that’s kind of been our achilles heel most of the year is just, we’ve gotten off to bad starts and when playoffs come, you can’t be giving these good teams two goal leads.”

The Trojans came out with some more jump in the second and look much better than the previous frame. Tisdale got the lone marker in the second as a Nicholas Andrusiak’s shot was tipped by Kylynn Olafson past Blazer goalie Brett Mirwald to cut the deficit in half.

However, Mirwald stood tall the rest of the way and would not allow any more, even with the Trojans pressing hard in the second and third periods. Hayden Wilm put one by Trojan netminder Boston Gelowitz late to seal the deal for the Blazers.

The regular season series between Saskatoon and Tisdale ends 4-0 in favour of the Blazers, and the Trojans were only able to muster 2 goals over those four games. Even with the past results, Kubat said come playoff time, things change.

“We have a group in the locker room there that believes that if we are all playing well, we can have a chance at beating these guys,” he said.

Tisdale finishes the regular season at 23-19-1-1, good for seventh in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

The first round of playoffs begin on Tuesday, Feb. 25 for Tisdale in Saskatoon.
