Thefts in Melfort have RCMP investigating, victims frustrated

Police in Melfort are investigating a series of thefts over the past couple of weeks, and one of the victims is speaking out.

Steve Yaremy, owner of Yaremy Screw Piles, was hit twice.

The first theft was overnight last Monday, when over $10,000 worth of tools were stolen from his locked trailer parked on the street in front of his house. A few more items were taken from one of his trucks a few days later.

“To wake up in the morning to see your truck has been ripped apart and every tool, every single thing in your truck is missing and then you have to go to work from there [it’s] very frustrating,” Yaremy told northeastNOW.

Yaremy said he spoke to an insurance adjustor and that process is now underway.

The generosity of neighbours and friends through this has been overwhelming, he said.

“The amount of people that have pulled me over, stopped me in a parking lot, come to the house, the shop, text messages, Facebook, saying ‘If you need anything Steve, let us know, you can come and use some of our tools,'” Yaremy said. “The support has been overwhelming and it’s been a great positive on such a negative situation.”

He said it’s amazing how the community has reached out and made sure he and his crew can keep making a living.

“I remember hearing about other contractors that maybe had tools stolen in the past and I offered to help, and I guess I just didn’t realize how much it meant until it happens to you,” Yaremy said.

He said he’s thinking of adding additional security features to help combat any future thefts. A neighbour down the street from Yaremy told him that he was now locking his garage doors for the first time in years after the incidents.

No one from the Melfort RCMP detachment was available for an interview, but it was confirmed to northeastNOW thieves targeted several vehicles in the city.

RCMP say all of the thefts remain under investigation, and residents are encouraged to lock their doors and remove valuables from vehicles, if possible.

They encourage anyone with information or surveillance video to contact them at 306-752-6420 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
