Mustangs Shutout Hawks... Again

Parkinson perfect as Mustangs sweep Hawks in weekend set

Melfort Mustangs goalie Shawn Parkinson did his best impression of a brick wall on Friday, and he did it one more time on Saturday, as the Mustangs swept their weekend opponent the Nipawin Hawks.

Friday was a 4-0 win for Melfort and 23 save shutout for Parkinson, and on Saturday, Parkinson one upped himself as he made 26 saves for a shutout in a 2-0 Melfort win.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said they’re playing well defensively right now, but when there’s breakdowns, there’s some help.

“When we do give away chances, and they did have a couple good ones both nights,” Logan told northeastNOW. “And [Parkinson] stood tall and didn’t let them have anything so that’s huge.”

The offence came from two veterans. The first came two minutes into the game as Austin Nault got a nice pass from Colton Schell in the slot, and a one timer beat Hawks goalie Ross Hawryluk to make it 1-0.

Melfort didn’t get their insurance marker until two minutes remained in the second period as Zach Anderson carried the puck out of the corner and waited out Hawryluk for his 12th goal of the season. It seemed to be almost all Melfort through two periods as they led on the scoreboard and the shot clock, holding a 30-12 lead in that department after two.

Nipawin wasn’t going to let Melfort walk away with another win on the weekend as they came back hard getting numerous high end scoring chances. They would fire 14 shots towards Parkinson, but none of which went in as Parkinson stopped 14 shots in the third period alone.

The win is Melfort’s second in a row, but also their seventh in their last eight games. Logan said they are starting to peak at the right time.

“It’s finally coming together where everybody is getting healthy and then some chemistry on some of the line combinations,” he said. “We’ve tried a few different things and we might still going forward a little bit, but it’s starting to click with a few guys.”

Meanwhile, with Melville’s 3-1 win over Yorkton on Saturday, Melfort still has a chance to finish third place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League as they have one game remaining and are just two points back of the Terriers, and also hold the tiebreak.
