“She would be proud,” Rindal memorial spiel off to a good start

The 1st Annual Deanna Rindal Memorial Open Doubles Spiel had everything that Rindal would have liked.

As the name would suggest, it featured doubles curling which she was a huge supporter of. The spiel also raised well over $1,000 to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, in which she was an even bigger supporter of.

All in all, it was a fitting tribute to Rindal, the CurlSask chief umpire that lost her battle to cancer back in November. Those that knew her said she would be proud of the event.

“I’m very sure,” said Pat Bibby, a volunteer and participant of the event. “She really liked doubles, she officiated that at the Continental Cup, She would be proud.”

The event also raised money to an important cause to Deanna and the rest of the Rindals, the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. Although the committee didn’t have a final total of funds raised, there’s already well over $1,000 raised just from raffle and 50-50 tickets as of Sunday afternoon.

“It was close to the Rindal family, they’ve been involved in the children’s hospital for a while,” event chairperson Norm Vetter said. “We sold some tickets, some 50/50 tickets and the initial fundraising that we did at the tournament is getting raised for the children’s hospital.”

With this being the first annual event, this will likely only keep growing. There was a lot of buzz from the competitors in saying they wanted to do more in future years.

“We’ve had a lot of comments from people this year saying that they had fun and they want to contribute to the event next year,” Vetter said. “They want to become more involved. I have no doubt that we’re going to have a larger bonspiel next year.”

Out of the 28 teams that came into the tournament, only eight teams made it to the last draw. Here are how the four finals played out.

A Final— Brad and Trish Bibby defeated Garth Beddome and Wally Tetarenko

B Final— Alysha and Robin Shillington defeated Jordon Henry and Jody Ritthaler

C Final— Mark Campbell and Tim Reid defeated Michel and Christian Hudon

D Final—Jeff Fisher and Peter Deppler defeated Elaine McCloy and Nicky Stefanowski
