Ches Leach to host special event Tuesday

The Prince Albert Raiders are ready to host a night entitled This Girl Can.

It will take place Tuesday evening before the Raiders take on the Calgary Hitman at the Art Hauser Centre. The night will feature the P.A. Northern Bears and team alumni including current University of Saskatchewan Huskies Morgan Willoughby and Jessica Vance.

In essence This Girl Can is about celebrating young girls and women in sport, business, and community groups.

“It’s like any great idea. You’ve seen it done in other markets and I think it was time for us to jump on board,” Cliff Mapes, executive director of business operations for the Raiders, said.

The speaking program is set to get underway in the Ches Leach Lounge, with the doors opening at 5 p.m. People only need their game tickets to be admitted. Those attending will get the chance to hear from current Northern Bears players, before getting to hear from Vance and Willoughby. There will also be a question and answer portion.

Mapes added the team felt it was especially important to be involved with the event, in part because the Esso Cup is not far off. The Raiders have partnered with P.A. Minor Hockey and the Esso Cup organizing committee.

“It’s really just a celebration of women’s achievements in sport and business and education,” Mapes said.

Mapes said the team plans to make the event a regular one. He said in the future they are looking to have it land on as close to International Women’s Day, March 8 as possible. The topics will also be different going forward.

“It doesn’t just have to be hockey,” he said.
