Mardi Gras on Main keeps ball rolling for Melfort Trade Alliance

Mardi Gras on Main wasn’t the first unique community event hosted the Melfort Trade Alliance (MTA), but it was the first under the carnival celebration theme.

Around 130 Melfort and area residents packed the Historic Post Office on Main Street for an evening of Cajun and creole food, zydeco and jazz music, and decorations featuring masks and beads.

For the MTA, the time felt right to host an event with a Mardi Gras theme, just four days removed from the actual Mardi Gras date on Feb. 25.

“It was a unified group of people and it was a fun filled fundraising night for the Melfort Trade Alliance,” Treasurer Tara Muntain said. “It’s an opportunity to pull business sectors together with community members to celebrate these different styles. Just to see agriculture, food, service, retail, and government representation… there were a lot of people there that celebrated together.”

In previous years, the MTA held St. Patrick’s Day and Main Street Derby events. Muntain couldn’t confirm an exact replica of Mardi Gras on Main will be held again, but she mentioned ideas for themed events are never ending.

“Every time we have something, it absolutely has to be put on because of the sponsors. Our community believes in our community, and that’s phenomenal to have that community and togetherness. Hats off to everybody that had a hand in making this event possible,” she said.

Up next for the MTA is the latest installment of its monthly networking meetings, where business owners and managers in Melfort are encouraged to come and meet up with their peers. The next meeting is Wednesday, March 11.
