A Melfort man facing drug and weapon charges after arrests near Wakaw will spend time in Melfort and Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Barkley Swenson, 46, appeared in Melfort Court on Tuesday, March 3. Numerous charges – including mischief, breaches, assault, proceed of property, failing to stop while being pursued by an officer, driving while prohibited, and dangerous driving – were transferred to P.A. Court. Swenson’s first appearance in P.A. will be on Wednesday, March 11 where his matters will be spoken to.

The summer months is when Swenson’s Melfort charges will be dealt with. He’ll appear in Melfort Court on July 16 for trial and sentencing.

Swenson will be sentenced on charges of theft of fuel and breach of undertaking, after he pled guilty to both. However, he pled not guilty to possession of meth, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and breach of release order.

On Aug. 6, Swenson will appear in Melfort Court again for a trial on charges such as break and enter, failure to comply with release order, and breach of probation.

The charges stem from when the Prince Albert Crime Reduction team arrested two males and three females in a vehicle at the Shell Gas Station near Wakaw on Jan. 30, as part of an ongoing investigation.

Melfort RCMP and the Prince Albert Integrated Street Enforcement Team also helped execute a search warrant at a home on Stovel Ave. in Melfort. The arrests and subsequent search yielded 29 grams of suspected methamphetamine, other drug paraphernalia, and a replica handgun.

Swenson has been remanded into custody until his appearances. He was sentenced to four months in jail in 2018 in a separate case involving possession of stolen property.
