Both winners of the King and Queen Trappers Competition were impressed with the challenge fellow participants provided them this year.

For the fifth time in a row, Clarissa Burns of Prince Albert took the top spot in the women’s category, while Richard Charles of Stanley Mission performed the best out of the men. It was Charles’ second year in a row to beat out the competition and both winners received $1,500 as a prize. They both earned more money awarded to them from the individual events.

“It’s very well organized and the payouts are good,” Burns said. “The community and competitors are so welcoming and it’s a good time all around.”

Burns finished the events with a total of 31 points having come first in animal calling, trap setting, log sawing and snowshoe racing. She noted when the competition was held, it was colder than previous years and the snowshoeing event ran late, but overall Burns is happy with how it was organized.

“Just come and try it because everyone is willing to help out,” she said about those interested in competing. “I’m not as good as I used to be. I’m getting older, so I’m slowing down and feeling a little bit weaker than previous years.”

Charles ended the competition with 34 points having placed first in rope winding, snowshoe racing, bannock making and axe throwing. Every year, he said the competition continues to get harder, which means he needs to continue training to keep his skills sharp.

“I do good at all running events because I’ve been doing some jogging,” Charles said. “You have to try and place in every event to get more points.”

He was also impressed by the level of organization this year.

“I wanted to thank Tania Colbert for running the show,” Charles said. “She did an awesome job. Everything went smooth just like she knows what she’s doing.”

In total, 12 men and 12 women participated in the King and Queen Trappers Competition.
