The Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club created history this weekend by winning the top small club award at the 2020 Saskatchewan Junior Provincial Swimming Championships held in Moose Jaw.

“This is the first time we came first in the top small club since 2013,” said head coach Hazem Hussein. “It was one of the most successful competitions in the new year.”

The Sharks finished with 47 total medals — the highest overall total, including 28 gold, 12 silver and 7 bronze. In the Junior Provincial Swimming Championship, the Sharks were utterly dominant, finishing with 675 points.

With 45 points, Clara Gelhorn won the most improved award for girls ages 11-12.

Here are highlights from the swim meet:

Liam Murphy won seven gold and two silver. He earned an AA time in the 100-metre backstroke.

Camryn Cooling won six gold and one bronze.

MacKenzie Emery won four gold, one silver and three bronze.

Luthar Wiberg won two gold, three silver and one bronze.

Soren Hansen won two gold, three silver and one bronze. He earned four AA times in the 100-, 200- and 400-metre freestyle and 200-metre backstroke.

Dani Boisson won three gold and one silver.

Natasha Coertze won a bronze in the 200-metre butterfly and earned six A times in the 50-, 100- and 200-metre freestyle; 100- and 200-metre backstroke; and 50-metre butterfly.

Clara Gelhorn won two gold medals and earned A times in the 400- and 800-metre freestyle and 50-metre butterfly. She won the award for the most improved swimmer at the meet.

Ava Helgason won one gold and had A times in all her events.

Mackenzie Naytowhow won a gold medal and achieved three A times in the 50- and 100-metre freestyle and 100-metre backstroke.

RaeAnna Huybrecht came sixth in 50-metre breaststroke and seventh in 50-metre butterfly. This was her first time competing at the provincial meet.

Avery MacDonald, who was also competing at the provincial meet for her first time, came eighth in the 200-metre breaststroke.

The Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club came first in the following relay races:

• Girls 11-12 4×50-metre freestyle relay (Dani Boisson, Clara Gelhorn, Mackenzie Naytowhow)

• Mixed 14 and over 4×50-metre freestyle relay (Mackenzie Emery, Luthar Wiberg, Camryn Cooling, Liam Murphy)

• Girls 13 and over 4×50-metre medley relay (Camryn Cooling, Ava Helgason, Mackenzie Emery, Clara Gelhorn)

• Mixed 14 and over 4×50-metre medley relay (Camryn Cooling, Liam Murphy, Mackenzie Emery, Luthar Wiberg).

Regina Masters Swim Meet

Three master swimmers from Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club travelled to Regina last weekend to compete in the Regina Masters swim meet.

Joy Friesen came first in 800-metre freestyle and 200-metre backstroke. She placed second in 50-metre butterfly and 50-metre freestyle.

Karin Ferris came first in 50-metre backstroke and 50-metre breaststroke. She placed third in 50-metre freestyle, 100-metre freestyle and 100-metre individual medley.

Chris Hansen came first in 50-metre butterfly, 50-metre freestyle, 50-metre breaststroke, 100-metre freestyle, 200-metre freestyle and 100-metre individual medley.

“We are pleased with our masters swimmers’ results and performances,” said head coach Hazem Hussein. “Way to go, Sharks!”

The club offers a variety of programs to meet all athletes’ potentials and ambitions not only on the competitive level but also on the non-competitive level. Prince Albert Sharks swim club accepts year-round registration.
