Nicole Rancourt says early election would be bad for Saskatchewan

Prince Albert NDP MLA Nicole Rancourt wants the Sask. Party to stick to the planned Oct. 26 election date, as the Premier remains coy about when the province will head to the polls.

On Wednesday morning, Premier Scott Moe wouldn’t rule out the possibility of an early election when questioned by reporters at the provincial legislature and said it was obvious why an early election could be called.

“It would be for one reason, to ask the people of this province for a mandate,” Moe said.

But Rancourt told paNOW an early election would pose a health risk, due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases in other provinces.

“Medical professionals have been contacting us saying that this is the wrong time to be bringing this forward,” she said.

Rancourt is also concerned that people need time to digest the coming provincial budget.

“We want to make sure that the people of Saskatchewan get a chance to look at it and be able to know exactly what the impacts will be. If they call an election right away, the people of the province won’t have that opportunity.

“If the Premier decides to have an early election it’s only for himself,” she said. “It’s not good for the people of the province.”
