Dogs from across the country compete in local show

Amid cancellations and suspensions of events and sports because of COVID-19, there is still a massive event taking place this weekend.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Prince Albert Kennel and Obedience Club is hosting a Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) All Breed Championship Show at Gateway Mall.

“What that means is dogs are coming to compete towards their CKC championships. They do so by entering competitions like these and earning points if successful,” Committee Organizing member Caroline Selzler told paNOW.

In this show, people can enter their dog if they are CKC registered. The four-legged friends competing in the show are from primarily the Prairie provinces but can be from all over Canada.

Selzler said there is the top dog award presented at the end of the year for dogs that have accumulated enough points and won enough competitions from attending shows such as this one.

Starting today they will host two shows per day and will run concurrently with two rings going on at the same time.

“It’s a really good chance for some dogs to pick up some points and be successful,” she said.

Selzler said despite the COVID-19 concerns the show will go on. Extra hand sanitizer is available and staff are taking precautions, she said.

The competition will judge dogs based on breed standards. How the dog looks, moves, and its temperment are all reviewed.

Saturday and Sunday’s show will each feature at least 175 dogs split into rough job categories including working dog, terrier, toy, hound, sporting and herding dogs. A winner will be selected from each group and the final seven dogs will compete for best in show.

There will be two opportunities per day for the dogs to win best in show.

“Everybody that’s here is absolutely passionate about dogs in general and their dogs specifically,” Selzler said. “Being able to come and just sort of forget about the woes of the world for a little bit. It’s still in the back of your mind but while you’re here during the day for the next two days everybody is here just focused on their dog and having the best time that they can.

“The big thing about shows is of course they’re about dogs but they’re also about friendships I have made some life long friendships here and I know people who’ve been showing and competing and supporting each other for decades and that’s really what this is all about,” she said.

Debbie McIntyre flew all the way from Hampton, New Brunswick to compete in the event with her dog Taraji Rose.

“I came out to the show plus to visit with my breeder of my Toy Fox Terriers,” she said.

She added she also competes in local shows back in Hampton. Prince Albert has been great so far for her.

“People are very friendly and it’s a nice venue,” she said. “A lot of people are scared and panicking. I’m not going to stop living and I’m not going to stop having fun with my dogs.”
