Services and events in La Ronge are being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it’s still unknown how the pandemic will affect day-to-day operations with the Town of La Ronge. According to La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich, there will be a meeting with senior municipal staff Tuesday to discuss how the town will move forward. He also expects the regular council meeting this Wednesday to go ahead as planned.

“It’s not a scary time, but it’s a worrisome time where everybody is looking at every other agency to see what they are doing,” Woytowich said. “We all have to be careful, but we have to look at the next level above us to see what direction and what plans are so we can work together. As mayor, I want to make sure everyone in the community is safe, that we’re careful. We have some really good staff and we don’t want to put them into a dangerous situation either.”

Advanced polls for the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s (LLRIB) general election originally scheduled for March 19 has been cancelled and officials are watching the situation day-by-day to determine if they should proceed with election day on March 30.

The Lac La Ronge Food Bank will also close as of March 17 until further notice and the Alex Robertson Public Library has suspended all programming and access to public computers. The library will continue to operate under regular hours, but patrons who are feeling unwell should avoid the premises.

All Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) and LLRIB schools will close effective March 20. Parents who are able to keep children home should do so immediately, with no absence or grade impacts. Earlier on Monday, larongeNOW reached out to NLSD Director of Education Jason Young, but didn’t hear back from him by publishing time.

The La Ronge Curling Club also made the decision to suspend the remainder of the season and cancelled regular play, the Super League and Year-End Bonspiel. The La Ronge Ice Wolves cancelled their Year-End Banquet as well, and the La Ronge Skating Club cancelled its special performance night this month.

The upcoming La Ronge and Area Music Festival has also been cancelled as per the direction given from the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association. Table tennis on Wednesday night at Gordon Denny Community School has also ended, along with training for the La Ronge Judo Club at Churchill Community High School.
