Air Ronge family wins snow sculpture contest

Building community spirit was the goal behind a snow sculpture competition organized by the Town of La Ronge.

The competition was won by Natasha Merriman and her family who lives in Air Ronge along Vickers Cres. On a warm day back in February, Merriman said they decide to see what they could create and ended up building a penguin, campfire and tent all made from snow.

“My husband did the snow blowing to make the piles, and then my kids and I worked on shaping them,” she said. “I kind of did more of the detailed stuff, then we all worked on colouring them.”

Merriman was inspired to build those specific snow sculptures because of her job as park manager with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport in La Ronge. She was initially going to build two penguins, but decided after the first one took five hours that a single penguin would be enough.

Merriman noted food colouring was also used to make the snow sculptures stand out. Since the sculptures were built, she has reapplied the colour but mentioned she won’t be adding more colour again.

“I think it was a fun program and hopefully they have it again and more people participate next time,” Merriman said.

As a reward from winning the contest, Merriman received a $25 gift card from Giant Tiger.
