Red Deer’s top cop says City Mounties are stepping up efforts to help ensure businesses dealing with the ongoing COVID-19 situation don’t fall victim to crime.

“As of today, the Red Deer RCMP has created a dedicated unit in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Red Deer RCMP Supt. Gerald Grobmeier said during a news conference Tuesday night. “We are enhancing proactive patrols in all areas of the city, including industrial areas and business parks.”

Grobmeier says the patrols are being done in both marked and unmarked vehicles, and that there are things businesses can do to help.

“We recommend you ensure all alarms are on and turn on some lights, both inside and outside, so that when we are patrolling we can clearly see around and inside your businesses.”

Grobmeier also recommends keeping window clear to prevent obstructing of views, and to check your properties regularly, perhaps by hiring a security company if you are unable to do it yourself.

As of Wednesday, the front counter at the downtown Red Deer RCMP detachment is closed to the public. Police are still accepting all reports from the public through email (Kreddeer@rcmp-grc.gc.ca) or telephone (403-343-5575).

Non-emergency reports can be made between 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week. In an emergency, or to report a crime in progress, call 9-1-1. When calling 9-1-1, you are asked to tell the operator if you are experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms.

“We continue to work around the clock to serve and protect the citizens of Red Deer,” said Grobmeier. “The Red Deer RCMP have implemented the recommendations of Alberta Health to ensure the protection of our first responders. Additionally, citizens may notice an increase in the use of personal protective equipment, hand sanitization as well as increased cleaning of equipment by staff.”
