The former council of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band has been reinstated on an emergency basis until at least April 30.

That’s according to an announcement released Thursday, which stated council will continue to closely monitor the development of COVID-19 and follow the advice and recommendations from health experts. Council may also further extend their terms in office as needed.

The decision was made after the LLRIB Elections Tribunal postponed the general election scheduled for March 30. It was postponed to protect membership from COVID-19, which has been declared a global pandemic.

“In these uncertain times and in response to many calls and messages from membership, chief and council must be available to be involved in the decisions and actions needed to protect the members of the LLRIB against COVID-19,” the announcement reads. “During this extended one-month term, chief and council are not authorized to make any expenditures to individual band members. Any on-reserve members needing assistance may contact their band offices for information.”

Band council also thanks membership for being understanding during these times and trust everyone can work together to protect each other and especially Elders.

Tammy Cook-Searson is the LLRIB chief and fellow councillors are Annie Ratt, Sam Roberts, Michael Bird and Dennis Sanderson for La Ronge; Kenny Ratt of Sucker River; Norman Ross of Hall Lake; Keith Mirasty and Angus Mirasty of Little Red River; Larry Charles, John Roberts and Linda Charles of Stanley Mission; and Gerald McKenzie of Grandmother’s Bay.
