Below seasonal temperatures expected until next week

Below seasonal temperatures are expected to linger for at least another week in the La Ronge area.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang, who said average temperatures for this time of year is 4 Celsius during the day and -9 C at night. The daytime high for April 1 is expected to -13 C with a low of -16 C, followed by a high of -12 C on Thursday and a low of -22 C.

“So far, I’m not seeing anything,” Lang said about the arrival of warm weather. “It looks like perhaps starting next week we’ll start getting into some warmer temperatures and I think that would be quite welcome just because we’re into a bit of a cold stretch for at least the next week.”

Lang also mentioned there’s an unusual weather system passing over La Ronge as it’s coming over the Manitoba border. She said it’s odd because weather systems usually come from the west, southwest or northwest. Lang noted it brought five centimeters of snow overnight with more snow expected tonight and into tomorrow.

“The townsite itself is probably in for another five centimeters of snow,” she said. “We also had some winds with that as well coming. Look for blowing and drifting snow on the highways where it’s exposed. People should be aware of that if they are heading out.”

With colder temperatures expected, Lang said it’s important residents continue to dress for the weather as there is still a risk of frostbite with the windshield. She also recommends checking the Highway Hotline before heading out.

“People should take those precautions when it comes to being out on the road,” Lang said. “I know we’re doing a lot of social isolating and that type of thing, but if people have to go out there and drive, just be prepared for winter driving conditions.”
