Local council meetings changing to meet public health orders

La Ronge and Air Ronge councils are coming up with ways to continue regular meetings with COVID-19 restrictions in place.

Councillors in La Ronge have yet to determine how their next regular meeting on April 22 at 7 p.m. will work out. According to Acting-Chief Administrative Officer Dean Yaremchuk, they are still determining the actual means in which councillors want to participate.

“Some have chosen to teleconference in and others may actually attend, and we are just sorting that out as we speak right now,” he said, adding they are also trying to figure out how the public can take part. “We’re determining how best to do that. The provincial regulations right now limit 10 persons for public gatherings and that’s something we need to be aware of. We’re still in the process of how best to do that.”

In recent weeks, La Ronge council has enacted a number of restrictions throughout the municipality. Readers can learn more about those measures here.

Air Ronge council, however, has decided to move ahead via teleconferencing for their next meeting. Mayor Gordon Stomp mentioned the date for it has yet to be set, but people will be able to dial in through a SaskTel system.

“We almost had it ready for the last meeting, but we ended up doing just an email situation,” he said. “There’s not much business going on right now within the municipality.”

The last meeting was held a couple weeks ago through email, which Stomp said wasn’t ideal. Questions, concerns and minutes were sent to councillors beforehand and he noted it took a couple of hours to finish the meeting that way.

The village office and local playgrounds have been closed in Air Ronge. Those accessing the Lac La Ronge Regional Water Corporation’s water truck stop will also no longer need to pay for water. There are no new customers at this time, but whoever has a fob and password can continue using the service.

If anyone wants to get a hold of village administration, they are asked to try calling the office at 1-306-425-2107, send an email to nvoar@sasktel.net or through Facebook.

“There will be people in there time-to-time to work on business,” Stomp said of the village office.
