Humboldt Historic Campground delaying opening due to COVID-19

The Humboldt Historic Campground won’t be opening on its traditional May long weekend this year due to COVID-19.

Humboldt Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Brent Fitzpatrick said the decision was made as numerous other campgrounds in Saskatchewan, including provincial parks, have also delayed opening.

“This is not the time to, kind of buck the trend as it were, and go ahead with our opening,” he said.

Fitzpatrick said there were just too many questions that didn’t have answers when it came to opening. One issue that was mentioned was about the washroom and being able to constantly clean it.

As for a possible date that they could open, Fitzpatrick said that will continue to be evaluated.

“I’m hopeful for June 1,” he said. “I think I’m more accepting that it’s going to be July 1.”

Some staff will remain at the campground to continue preparing for the season, but Fitzpatrick said for now they won’t be able to hire their usual four students to work at the campground and mini golf.

He added they already had some reservations for the May long weekend, but they’ve had to notify those individuals that they won’t be able to fulfill those dates. Campers can still make reservations for later in the season though.

“Make your reservations,” Fitzpatrick told northeastNOW. “You can do it through admin@humboldtchamber.ca, or give us a call at our landline. We’ll take the reservation and then we’ll notify you as we get closer.”

Fitzpatrick also continued to encourage people to support local businesses during this time and the Chamber is working on some campaigns to try and remind residents of that.
