Mother-daughter duo in La Ronge sewing masks to prevent virus transmission

A mother-daughter duo from La Ronge have put their sewing skills to work making face masks for essential workers and the general public.

Anne-Marie Jakeway and her mother Joan Kidd began making the masks about two weeks ago and so far have made more than 100. They are currently switching over to an assembly line method in an effort to get masks out to those who need them.

“I’m on a bunch of sewing groups because I sew children’s clothes as my hobby and all of a sudden these mask patterns started popping up,” Jakeway said. “We’re kind of lucky where we live that we’ve haven’t really had any major cases, but a lot of these groups are out East, so they are a couple weeks ahead of us. They are calling for masks over there, so I figured I may as well hop on the bandwagon, so to speak, and get the ball rolling with these.”

Each mask takes less than 10 minutes to make and Jakeway noted they are selling for $5 each. The cost of the mask only covers the materials to make it and does not include the women’s time, which is being donated. The masks are being sold in four sizes including small, medium, large and extra large for adults, and small, medium and large for children.

Jakeway mentioned the masks are being made mostly from 100 per cent cotton and they specifically fit around the face. They also include a small pocket if users want to add a filter.

“She’s been helping me out a lot because its easier if one person is on the machine and the other is on the serger,” Jakeway said about her mother. “Everybody really likes the masks. They fit your face.”

While the masks are washable and reusable, there is some information the public should know if they consider purchasing some. For instance, Jakeway warned they are not certified medical devices and there is no guarantee it will protect the user from COVID-19. The masks are also only meant to be worn for 30 minutes to one hour or whenever it becomes wet from respiration.

Those who purchase the masks are additionally warned not to pull on them near the mouth or nose to avoid contamination. Jakeway provides an information sheet to all buyers.

“If you are an essential worker like a health care worker, grocery store attendant or someone who is an airline mechanic, the people who can’t stay home to work can definitely contact me,” she said. “I have received some donations to help if somebody wants a mask but are unable to afford one.”
