Easter traditions still viable amid pandemic

Easter traditions like hiding candy or the preparing of large meals can still go ahead as long as its limited to those living in the same household.

That’s according to La Ronge’s Dr. Michael Bayda, who said residents should still be able to do many of the same activities they have in previous years despite the pandemic. He noted it’s particularly important for people to feel connected to their families and friends during holidays.

“If it is sunny out, everyone can go outside as a household and I hope everyone can find ways to stay connected to family through remote technology or phone calls,” Bayda said. “People should be able to participate in the same traditions they have if it’s at their house.”

Current provincial measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 include no gatherings of more than 10 people either indoor or outdoors. Residents should also maintain a distance of more than two metres when coming into contact with others. Public outings should also only be limited to picking up groceries, prescriptions and other necessities.

If there are residents in need of assistance at this time or have no food, Bayda mentioned there likely isn’t any harm in delivering prepared food to neighbours and family. He said it’s important that nobody sending or receiving the food is sick, however, and any shared food follows provincial guidelines.

“In general, kind of minimizing those social gatherings with the same kind of recommendations laid out previously still applies,” Bayda said.

Earlier this week, the provincial government recommended Easter gatherings should be limited to those living in the same home. It was also suggested residents use video chat to communicate over the long weekend and to shop at grocery stores before the weekend.
