La Ronge resident donates Easter baskets to families at Piwapan

The Easter Bunny had a little help this year from La Ronge resident Melanie Potts, who collected donations to benefit families at Piwapan Women’s Centre.

“I guess they have a little place in my heart,” she said. “I can’t imagine being out of your home and not be in a stable situation, especially when we are going through hard times right now.”

About one month ago, Potts began asking local businesses and individuals for donations in order to put together Easter baskets for children at the shelter. She was able to raise $600 and create 15 baskets, which was about halfway to her goal. The baskets will be delivered Thursday.

Potts noted the baskets include some Discovery Toys including a book and toy. Also in the baskets are chocolates and other candies, as well as toothbrush and toothpaste packages donated by the dental unit at Pre-Cam Community School.

“I think they will have fun opening them up and seeing what’s inside,” Potts said.

Potts mentioned preventing the spread of COVID-19 has been on her mind and those at Piwapan. She said everything in the baskets was washed down before being covered with cellophane wrap. Potts added the baskets will then be placed in boxes and staff at Piwapan will take their own steps to ensure the baskets are sanitized.

This occasion marks the second time Potts has done an endeavour like this one for families at Piwapan. For Christmas last year, she raised close to $1,200 and was able to provide an array of gifts.
