Slight drop in calls for service to La Ronge RCMP since beginning of March

La Ronge RCMP are experiencing a slight drop in calls for service since March 1 compared to the same time last year.

That’s according to Acting-Staff Sgt. Josh Hallett, who said the numbers reflect the same trend across the division. While it’s too early to tell if the drop in calls is related to social distancing efforts, he noted officers have noticed traffic is slower and there is less movement of residents downtown.

Between March 1 and April 20 of 2019 and this year, Hallett said there’s been about 100 fewer calls for service.

“There hasn’t been a huge amount, but it is enough we have taken note of it,” Hallett said. “I don’t know for sure we can say its directly related to COVID. There are a lot of factors at play and it’s a pretty small sample size to try and make the determination COVID is slowing down the stats.”

For the most part, Hallett mentioned it’s been business as usual at the detachment in recent months. He said there has been no change to the way police respond to critical or emergency matters and the public continues to call and report crime. La Ronge also still has a full complement of officers.

In regards to the public health orders enacted for COVID-19, Hallett said the detachment receives calls almost on a daily basis from residents concerned about others disobeying the law. He added those calls are consistent with what’s happening across the province.

“Some of the people are on high alert and police want to be aware of any gatherings over the public health order or anything related to that,” he said.
