‘If we do this right, we will only have to do this once’: Meadow Lake officials respond to Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan

Today’s announcement from Premier Scott Moe lifts previously restricted businesses to reopen in phases as the province eases into a ‘new normal.’

The first phase includes reopening of medical services, golf courses, fishing and boat launches, parks and campgrounds, which have been given the green-light to begin opening on May 4 .

Mayor Merlin Seymour told meadowlakeNOW precautionary measures are still in place though the premier’s announcement presents hopeful initial steps for the local economy.

“Premier Moe and the chief medical health officer are methodically and cautiously trying to move the economy forward,” Seymour said. “If cases begin popping up again, chances are everything with this plan could be and should be retracted until there is a handle on it. They’ve done a great job keeping the numbers low up to now.”

In part of a statement issued by City staff, the first municipal services to be reopened will be the Lions Park campground, and provincial guidelines will be followed upon reopening which means access will be limited.

“At this point, there is no timeline for the reopening of our other recreation facilities and we understand that as the highest source of risk, these will be the last City services to reopen,” the statement read.

The City acknowledged the Meadow Lake Golf Course as a long-term service for the community and assures extensive safety measures to be implemented to help keep residents safe while providing an additional source of outdoor exercise.

Trevor Dignean, administrator for the Meadow Lake and District Chamber of Commerce said if the local community can do this right, we’ll only have to do this once.

“I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet,” he said. “I think this needs to be the new normal until there are zero cases in the world, the virus can still spread.”

Public access to the following previously restricted medical services include dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, optician services, podiatry, occupational therapy and chiropractic treatment.

In the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan issued April 23, all medical service providers will be required to continue to take precautionary measures as outlined by the Chief Medical Health Officer including health care provider and client screening, gloves, facemasks, etc. when it is not possible to physically distance.

As restrictions are gradually lifted, the Government of Saskatchewan and its Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab, will carefully monitor the daily number of reported cases and transmission reports.
