Those wanting to get their car seats checked by Melfort Ambulance, may have to wait a little while, or do so virtually for the time being.

Manager of Melfort Ambulance Wayne Therres said they are following the recommendation by the Saskatchewan Injury Prevention Institute, as well as the provincial government, they are unable to do in-person car seat checks.

“We want to make sure that everybody still has their car seats installed properly, and that the child is in the seat properly and the straps are the right way around so the child remains safe,” Therres told northeastNOW. “But they just don’t want us doing it in person.”

Therres said for now, those wanting help on getting their car seats installed properly can call Melfort Ambulance at 306-752-4395. They will try to help over the phone, but Therres said they also have some online resources to help including Youtube videos and links to different website. There’s also a connection in Saskatoon and that individual is able to help via FaceTime.

If people are trying to get their car seats put in now, Therres said to make sure everything is secure, follow the level marker on the car seat to show where it has to sit, make sure the straps are tight with less than one inch of movement side to side.

“Then the straps inside the seats themselves, make sure they are snug across the child’s shoulders, there should only be one finger width underneath that top strap,” Therres said. “And the crotch strap should fit comfortably in there.”

As for when they are allowed to resume in person checks, Therres is hoping sooner rather than later.

“As of the note that we received this morning, they are going to re-evaluate the program at the end of May,” he said.
