NESPCA running ongoing bottle drive fundraiser

The North East SPCA is running an ongoing bottle drive while empty cans and bottles begin to pile up with SARCAN locations being closed for the time being.

The drive will help residents get rid of the unwanted recyclables and serve as a fundraiser for the animals.

Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter Manager Kristy Mason said right now they can take the recyclables at the shelter.

“We are hoping to branch out into other communities as well, we just need volunteers that can work as a bottle drop-off spot and then deliver them into the SPCA here,” Mason said.

So far, one full dog kennel has been filled with the bags of empties.

“We are hoping to get at least four or five of them filled up,” Mason said.

The NESPCA is also hoping to eventually host a garage sale and are asking residents to hang onto any items they would like to donate until they can set a date.

Adoptions and donations have been slow during the COVID-19 pandemic according to Mason.

“The bottle drive should balance things out a little bit and we have received some pretty good support from the community with dropping off food donations,” Mason said.

The shelter is always in need of dry cat food with around 30 cats in the facility at this time.

Since the shelter opened on October 5, 2019, over 150 animals have come through the doors making the need for donations

The NESPCA is participating in the Emergency Giving Tuesday on May 5, 2020, and are encouraging monetary and food donations for relief during this time of crisis due to COVID-19.
