Town of La Ronge prepared to declare state of emergency if needed

The Town of La Ronge is prepared to call a local state of emergency if the need arises.

That’s according to Acting Chief Administrative Officer Dean Yaremchuk, who said a resolution has been prepared for when the time comes when council determines its warranted. He noted declaring a state of emergency would provide council with special powers to do what they need to do within the municipality to control a potential emergency.

“There are a number of things in play,” Yaremchuk said. “For us, we’re following the lead of the Saskatchewan Health Authority in regards to, in this case, the COVID-19 situation and I think we’re in very close contact with them and the province. They would probably provide us information that a point of contact may trigger a state of local emergency response.”

If a local state of emergency is declared, there are two emergency operations centres that have been identified including the La Ronge Regional Fire Department building and the town office.

In the event the number of COVID-19 infections in Saskatchewan begins to escalate, Yaremchuk said it’s important the town be prepared. He noted so far staff have done a good job at providing essential services while respecting the provincial regulations in place.

“We have received some of the information regarding Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan and we’re just looking to see what impacts it may have on our own operation here,” Yaremchuk said.
