Indigenous teacher program in tri-communities begins second intake

Apr 27, 2020 | 2:41 PM

After what Program Head Morris Cook called a successful first year, the second intake for the Northern Saskatchewan Indigenous Teacher Education Program has commenced.

“In the last couple of weeks, we had to turn to online because of the pandemic, but up until that point in time, we had great success and I expect the same success for the remainder of the year,” he said. “We started off with 20 teacher education students and we ended up with 19. We had one who had to withdraw for personal reasons.”

For the second intake process, Cook mentioned they are looking for 26 suitable candidates to apply for the program. As a partnership between the Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI), Lac La Ronge Indian Band and University of Regina, the intake is currently open to 13 band students and 13 who are Métis.

For those interested in applying, Cook noted they must meet the admission requirements of the U of R like holding at least a 65 per cent average out of high school. For those who are 21 and older and have been out of school for more than two years, they can also apply as a mature student. Those who apply through the second method must prove to administration they are mature and have the aptitude to complete the program.

“Our focus will be more on Indigenous land-based education,” Cook said. “There’s a big emphasis on the traditional languages namely Cree and Michif. Hopefully, a lot of our programs can be taught outside, but of course with the environment we’re in, we will have to modify it a little bit.”

Those interested in applying can contact Cook directly at morris.cook@gdi.gdins.org or call 1-306-425-5892 or 1-306-420-4571. Cook is also accepting manual application to be shipped, scanned or faxed to him.

Students who are of Métis ancestry are also encouraged to apply as there is funding available through GDI. During the first intake, only seven Métis students applied and administration is looking for at least 13 this time.

“It is an excellent opportunity for students of Métis ancestry to attend our program,” Cook said.

The application deadline is June 30.
