Wrights Greenhouse will open its Beatty and Melfort locations this Friday.

Owner and operator Angie Bragg told northeastNOW greenhouses are deemed as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic and they will open as normal as possible.

“One of the parameters is that we can only have one customer per 1,000 square feet,” Bragg said.

That means in Melfort there will be no more than three customers shopping at one time and in Beatty they can have eight customers at one time in the building.

“It’s going to be a bit of a challenge for everybody because some people may have to wait to get into the store and we have to set up like the grocery stores with arrows and following social distancing,” Bragg said.

Bragg expects this year to be quite busy for the greenhouse with there being more interest in planting a garden and growing vegetables at home.

“We have been planting more vegetables than we have ever so we are seeding tomatoes, cucumbers, and any kind of vegetable we have been seeding,” Bragg said. “There is going to be a big demand for that this year.”

With people isolating and working at home, planting a garden will also serve as an activity to stay productive.

“I just think people need to see some life, some greenery and some flowers, so we will have some things at our location in Melfort but we don’t have heat there so it will mostly be cold, hearty stuff,” Bragg said.

Items like pansies are able to be planted and left outside safely at this time.

When it comes to first time gardeners, Bragg had some tips.

“It is a little overwhelming if you start too big. If you are going to plan to make a garden spot in your yard, I would suggest starting small,” Bragg said. “If you don’t have a house and say live in an apartment and have a balcony, you can garden in a container just as easy as in the ground.”

There will be reduced hours this year which will be Sundays to Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Wrights Greenhouse will also be offering pick-up, and local delivery.
