Preparations to open the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park (LLRPP) is going ahead despite the lockdown currently underway in northern Saskatchewan.

That’s according to Robin Campese, the executive director of visitor experiences for Sask. Parks, who said reservations for the park will begin online May 4. There will be a warning on the website, however, letting potential campers know the current restrictions on non-critical travel in and out of the North.

“Campers need to be aware if they make the reservation and the travel restriction is still in effect, you may not be able to travel to the park,” Campese said. “So, consider holding off or book at your own risk.”

Park managers have also been instructed to begin to process of opening provincial parks. Campese noted that includes preparing boat launches as the ice and snow lift, as well as preparing all services like water and electricity. Maintenance activities will also resume and Campese added staff will get ready to undertake enhanced cleaning and disinfection activities, which management learned about through the COVID-19 situation.

Services in the LLRPP will also be limited as every other site will be closed to promote physical distancing. Campese said access will be restricted at group facilities, playgrounds, beaches and recreational facilities. Large shower facilities and laundry rooms will be closed plus access to washrooms will be limited to one household at a time.

“We are five weeks away from actual park openings, so there may be some changes to that between now and then, so we will be reassessing as we go,” Campese said.

As of June 1, Saskatchewan residents will be able to stay overnight in provincial parks, while they are only limited to day visits in May. With the lockdown in northern Saskatchewan, it’s unclear how the process of opening the park to the public will look.
