Melfort Fair cancelled for 2020 amid COVID-19 pandemic

First it was the Nipawin Fair, then it was the Humboldt Summer Sizzler. Now, the Melfort Fair.

“Given the fact that West Coast Amusements now is unable to make it out here, and the government health guidelines surrounding large gatherings, we’ve unfortunately, but responsibly made the decision to cancel the Melfort fair this year,” Kim Eskowich, Melfort Ag Society manager, said.

The Melfort Fair, originally scheduled for July 17 to 19, 2020 is another event that has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the fair won’t take place this year, Eskowich said they are looking into other events later in the summer.

“We’re going to look at possibly having a drive-in movie at the fair grounds,” he said. “And later on in the year we could probably try and run some of the other events if the people are willing to do it. Things like the horse show or motocross, they don’t necessarily have to happen during the fair.”

The mile long parade hasn’t officially been cancelled yet.

The cancellation of the fair will be a major blow to the community and surrounding area as numerous vendors come to the event, and other groups use it as a chance to fundraise.

“We have 11,000, 12,000 people go through the gates,” Eskowich said. “But it’s kind of reality of this year, so there’s not really a lot we can do about it other than follow the guidelines.”

Eskowich added they have already started planning next year’s event.
