Spring clean-up week

Melfort’s Spring Clean-up Week begins on Sunday

May 8, 2020 | 11:00 AM

A lot of people have been spending more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the activities keeping people busy is yard work, and for many the City of Melfort’s Spring Clean-up Week comes at just the right time.

The week will start Sunday, May 11 and wrap up May 21.

“During that period of time, residents of Melfort are able to haul their yard refuse and materials that they’ve removed from their gardens to our landfill and they will not be charged for those items,” Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW.

Regular household garbage, furniture, appliances, and construction materials taken to the landfill will be charged at the normal rate.

Lutz said you can also take advantage of your weekly garbage pick-up to get rid of some of your yard waste.

“If you place items such as leaves, grass, garden refuse in clear plastic bags, along with your regular waste pick-up on the curbside on your waste pick-up day, our contractor [Greenland Waste] will pick up these items for you,” Lutz said.

Bundled tree limbs under four feet in length will also be collected with your curbside pickup.

Lutz said residents have been busy in their yards so far this spring.

“People have been doing a lot of yard work, and so we expect they’ll be appreciative that they can kind of dispose of these items in an easy fashion,” Lutz said.

The landfill is now open Monday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. It will be closed, however, on Victoria Day, Monday, May 21.

The compost site in Melfort at the west end of Centre St. is also now open for the season. The site is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
