Accessing local food bank easier than people may realize: Executive director

Anyone facing financial challenges during the COVID-19 situation doesn’t have far to go if they need help putting food on the table.

The local food bank wants to remind people they are welcome to stop by and pick up a hamper of food items for themselves and those in their household whenever they are experiencing hardship. People may not know the food bank is easy to access.

“The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre is here to help those struggling with food insecurity in the Battlefords and the surrounding area,” executive director Erin Katerynych said. “If you are struggling to make ends meet, we are here to help you with emergency food hampers.”

Katerynych said no referral is needed to access the food bank. Anyone can visit the centre and pick up a hamper simply by showing identification for themselves and each member of their household. They also need to provide proof of their address, such as a piece of mail or a bill that includes their home address. They are required to provide this information each time they use the food bank. The food bank’s policy is one emergency food hamper per household.

Katerynych reminds people to make alternate arrangements to access the food bank if they are not well for any reason.

“If you are sick, or have a compromised immune system please stay home, and have someone come and pick up the emergency food hamper for you,” she said.

Anyone with questions can visit the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre online site or call 306-937-5505.

Some of the items contained in a food hamper include assorted non-perishable foods as well as fresh produce, dairy products and frozen meat when available. There are also treats for children.

“We are here to help,” Katerynych said.

The food bank is located at 1171 101 St. in North Battleford. It distributes food hampers Mondays to Fridays, from 9:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.

To comply with the province’s COVID-19 precautions, only three people are permitted into the food bank at a time to pick up an emergency food hamper.
