Busy month of May for Wright’s Greenhouse

It’s been a busier than usual first month for a local greenhouse in the northeast.

A number of factors are contributing to the increased sales and higher demand.

Wright’s Greenhouse in Melfort and Beatty owner Angie Bragg told northeastNOW they have never seen anything like it.

“I think people have extra time so they are gardening this year and also they might have extra money with kids not being involved in anything,” Bragg said. “This (gardening) is also good way for families to get together and plant some plants.”

A gradual trend in gardening has been seen by greenhouses over the past 15 years and now an even bigger boost this year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have had some first-time gardeners but a lot are the seasonal gardeners who have maybe expanded their garden plots,” Bragg said.

When it comes to those first-time or inexperienced gardeners, Bragg provided some tips.

“We have had nothing but wind for the last while and planting out in the wind is detrimental to those plants,” Bragg said. “If it’s windy, it just whips them around, they can’t get enough water, and they wilt over and die.”

Bragg recommends planting in the morning and in the evening to avoid wind damage.

“They will just flourish easier if you can plant out of the wind,” Bragg said.

Tomatoes have been a hot item this year so it is especially important to protect them which can be done by covering them with a milk jug when it is windy.

Container gardening is also a convenient option.

“It’ so much easier than a big garden and trying to weed it in the middle of the summer so I encourage container gardening,” Bragg said. “Even in the fall when it is supposed to freeze, you can just bring it in.”

The COVID-19 restrictions put in place at both of the greenhouse locations have been well received by patrons.

“We are trying to have a relaxed environment to come here and shop because who wants to be shopping for plants in a stressful environment,” Bragg said. “We see people following the rules because they are used to it by now.”

At first, children were not allowed to come into the greenhouse but with some parents not any other options that rule has been lifted.

Wrights Greenhouse is open for business Sunday to Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
