Pimiskatan Canoe Club gearing up for 2020 season

May 26, 2020 | 3:00 PM

There will be a 2020 season of the Pimiskatan Canoe Club even though many other outdoor recreational activities have been cancelled.

That’s according to a written statement by club member Warren Kelly, which states registration will be held June 3 and 4 with a bit of a twist. Those who have last names with the letter A to L will do so at 7 p.m. on June 3, while those with letters M to Z are asked to do so the following day. If there are two individuals from the same household, they are encouraged to sign up on the same date.

“Initially, there will be no organized activities such as the Wednesday weekly races [or] Thursday weekly lessons/recreational paddling or trips,” Kelly announced. “Members will also have to use their own paddles and life jackets because of disinfection difficulties. These items will be available on a limited first come, first serve for sign out for the season. A spray bottle of disinfectant will be available for commonly touched items.”

Kelly also mentioned there is no problem with solo or tandem canoeing with people from the same household. In a tandem canoe, paddlers will be six feet apart and they should be able to practice social distancing when moving the canoe. It will be up to separate households if they wish to canoe together.

The Pimiskatan Canoe Club is located at Eagle Point and those who are members have access to 16 canoes on McGibbon Bay. The canoes can also be signed out for overnight trips if approved by the executive.

“With no organized activities, everyone will be responsible for self-rescue and be mindful of the cold water early in the season,” Kelly wrote. “We have kept the membership fees the same even though our provincial fees have gone up.”

More information about the season can be found on the club’s website.
