Assistant Art Education Position at Mann Art Gallery

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Assistant Art Educator will support the Gallery Educator to create art learning opportunities for people of all ages, and educational material using resources from the Mann Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection, exhibitions, and local artists.

The Assistant Educator will create educational packages related to the gallery’s current and future programming and the Permanent Collection, design and facilitate online and (as pandemic safety allows) in-person workshops & classes, virtual summer art camps with art kits, outreach programs, and assisting with an outdoor Metis art project.

Projects will be designed for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, but especially for families with school-aged children.

• Work in a combination of on-site and remote settings, including outdoors for programs
• Learn art history relevant to significant local artists represented in our Permanent Collection and formulate methods to incorporate this work in engagement activities
• Assist the Gallery Educator with the planning, development, and execution of virtual school tours in June. This includes drafting interactive tour scripts and hands-on art activities and kits based on the Gallery’s current exhibits and on historical and Indigenous artworks in the Permanent Collection. These scripts and activities can be transferred to tours and programs for the general public.
• Research artwork in the Permanent Collection that are relevant to Indigenous heritage and design tours and information sessions that explain the objects’ background, context, cultural significance, artistic techniques, and artist’s biographic information
• Assistant with the planning and execution of the current year’s Indigenous Artist Residency with local Metis artist Leah Dorion. A series of outdoor workshops on the theme of women’s teachings and sewing (Baby moss bags, Metis-style ribbon skirts), and land based education (medicinal plants teachings) will take place. Tasks include arranging the workshop dates and locations, compiling the materials required for each workshop, communicating with contract workshop instructors, taking registrants, and ensuring that photo-release forms are signed.
• Assist with developing themed virtual arts camps/sessions in the summer. Research and implement art projects, create inventories, support the administration of the camps (taking registrations), and oversee the daily activities of the Camps.
• Create videos and photo blog posts for art activities, design and carry out art activities with kits to take place at local community events, while following socially distant guidelines; may be virtual (Canada Day, National Aboriginal Day, Art in the Park, Farmers Market), and work with partnering organizations such as the Prince Albert Multicultural Council, YWCA Settlement Services, Downtown Business Improvement District, and Indian and Metis Friendship Centre.
• Assist the Gallery Educator in marketing summer & fall programs, including school tours.

Job Requirements

• Educational and practical experience in Visual Arts, Art History, and/or Education would be best suited for this position.
• Candidates should have a minimum of one year of post-secondary education.
• Previous knowledge or interest in Indigenous and Saskatchewan art.
• Ability to work with children, individuals with developmental/physical disabilities and/or seniors is an asset.
• The candidate should be polite, patient, organized, be able to work with people of varying ages, capacities and ethnicity, and sustain excellent communication skills.
• Familiarity with Windows computer systems, word processing, Microsoft Publisher, photo editing software, and email. Digital skills including recording and editing simple videos using cell phones, uploading videos to YouTube, tracking online engagement etc.
• Must be able to stay self motivated to work remotely
• Must have reliable internet connection at home in order to work remotely and upload videos and large data files.
• A valid driver’s license.
• Fluent in English; basic speaking levels of French, Arabic, and/or Cree would be an asset.
