Caged for Critters fundraiser set for next week

The North East SPCA is holding a unique fundraiser next week.

‘Caged for Critters’ will be held June 1 to 5 at the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter in Melfort.

Shelter manager Kristy Mason told northeastNOW it’s the first time the North East SPCA has held the ‘Caged for Critters’ fundraiser, and they got the idea from a similar event held by the North Battleford Humane Society a couple of months ago.

“There will be five of us that will be sleeping in the dog kennels each night for four nights,” Mason said. “We’ll be reaching out, trying to get pledges and doing Facebook Live videos, just explaining how it is staying in a kennel overnight.”

Mason said the videos will also show what the dogs go through while they’re at the shelter, and it will also help educate people what the shelter is all about, the different activities held, and how the staff take care of the animals.

Mason said there are other people helping to raise funds during the event.

“We do have some mystery guests that’ll be coming in each night,” Mason explained. “They have a challenge of raising $500 before 8 p.m., if they can’t do that they will be sleeping in a kennel. They also have the option to switch it the other way around where if they can get their friends to raise $500 by 8 p.m., they will sleep in the kennel.”

The fundraiser also allows the SPCA to highlight some of the animals staying in the shelter. Mason said that’s especially important, since people still cannot tour through the shelter regularly due to COVID-19 restrictions.
