Bylaw Crackdown in Melfort

City of Melfort’s bylaw team to perform city-wide traffic bylaw sweep

The City of Melfort is cracking down on traffic bylaws next week.

The bylaw team will be doing a city-wide sweep for a number of infractions from June 1 to 5.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW the infractions include parking unattached trailers on city streets.

“You cannot leave your unattached trailers on the street, they block the view of people backing out of their driveways and they increase the chance of either a collision or some injury,” Lutz said.

Melfort residents are also being reminded to keep back alleys clear.

The city’s news release said alleys are also used by emergency services “as an alternate route or entrance to an emergency scene to allow for better access to injured citizens, citizens in distress or properties that require the Fire Department,” Vehicles should not be parked in those areas.

Street parking is permitted in residential neighbourhoods, but vehicles should be moved within 48 hours. Lutz said that allows the city to do street sweeping and other services that need to take place.

There is also no parking of camper trailers, buses or other vehicles on city-owned property, including lots or boulevards.

Lutz said they wanted residents to know the bylaws and rules ahead of time, so they would be able to follow them and avoid any repercussions. The news release said anyone with vehicles parked in alleys, lanes, or on city property should have those vehicles moved, or they would receive a violation fine.

The penalty for parking in a prohibited area, including a back alley, is $100. Leaving an unattached trailer parked on the street is a $75 fine, as is leaving a vehicle parked on the street for over 48 hours.
