Humboldt's City Clerk Retires

Humboldt’s city clerk retires after 35-year career

May 29, 2020 | 10:21 AM

One of Humboldt’s longest serving municipal employees is calling it a career.

Sandra Pauli, Humboldt’s city clerk and director of corporate services, will work her final day with the municipality on Friday, May 29.

“It’s a mixed bag of emotions for sure,” Pauli told northeastNOW. “I’m excited to begin my retired life, but it will also be a big change for me; some trepidation that I might leave. It’s been a part of my life for so many years.”

Pauli said her final day of work will be emotional, but she also never imagined she’d reach this day with the City of Humboldt after her career began with a six-month maternity leave contract in 1985.

After her initial contract expired, Pauli was brought on as a fulltime clerk steno. When opportunities to move up the municipal level presented themselves, Pauli would apply, such as when she became Humboldt’s water billing and payroll clerk. Pauli completed the Local Government Administration program at the University of Regina in 1995 and became Humboldt’s city clerk in 2000.

“The thing about working with local government and the different positions I was able to work in is it was such a variety of things I was able to do,” Pauli said. “I was always interested and engaged in the community and the things that were happening at various times. I enjoyed it so much; I never felt the need to look elsewhere.”

Three highlights stick out to Pauli during her 35 years of working for the City of Humboldt. The first being when Humboldt became Saskatchewan’s 13th city in 2000, the second being the sale of all 28 lots in the city’s lottery lot draw in 2007, and the third being the shift in technology from when she first began to her retirement in 2020.

“Computers and starters filled up entire rooms and backup drives were huge to the technology we work with today,” she said. “It’s simply mindboggling how those types of advances have occurred over the years; emails and the expectation of response in this day and age, and the way we communicate with our citizens through social media and our city’s website.”

Pauli said she won’t leave Humboldt following her retirement. She plans to rest shortly following 35 years of fulltime work, but there are volunteer opportunities and a long-awaited trip to Greece to take once it’s safe to do so.

When her final day of work has come and gone, Pauli said she’ll miss council, the staff, and other people she works with daily.

In the meantime, Pauli has one piece of advice for Lori Yaworski, the city’s finance manager and Pauli’s replacement as city clerk.

“Try to stay calm and not panic. Things will work out in the end.”
