The first awards from the new Dr. M.Z. Hussain Memorial Scholarship Program have been made.

The funding is a partnership between Prince Albert’s Victoria Hospital Foundation (VHF) and Rizwan and Saima Ali of P.A. Pharmacy to benefit health care professionals at the hospital seeking to further their education.

Each year $10,000 in funding is awarded to local health care professionals and is offered in honour of Dr. Hussain who was a pillar of support in the community for many years and who was passionately committed to the mental health of citizens and youth.

“It was an interesting situation for the committee who decides on the successful recipients,” Sherry Buckler, the CEO of the VHF told paNOW. “Because of COVID-19, only those applicants who could attend an online educational course were chosen.”

Buckler said as social distancing rules change, future awards would be given to those seeking opportunities that may involve travel or moving into a more traditional instructional setting.

In a media release Buckler said the “VHF knows that investing in our medical staff is a live-saving and long lasting benefit for all who will need our help when the time comes. We are grateful to the Ali family for sponsoring this program in Dr. Hussain’s memory. This important initiative will enhance patient care in our hospital for years to come.”

The 2020 successful candidates who each received varying amounts from the $10,000 amount depending on their requests are: Kim Christmann, Cory Jo Durand, Carol Masuskapoe, Jocelyn Schrader, Tyla Sylvestre and Tamara Whitford.

They are seeking continued education in various areas including: Clinical Traumatologist, Concurrent Disorders, Psychiatric Nursing, Collaborative Nursing, Pharmacy Technician.
