Saskatchewan Special Olympics’ Law Enforcement Torch Run nearing ‘virtual’ finish line

As Saskatchewan Special Olympics has its competitions, meetings, programs, and training sessions suspended until June 30 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s still one fundraiser and activity taking place in a unique environment.

The Saskatchewan Law Enforcement Torch Run is a program where law enforcement members throughout the province assist in generating awareness and funds for Special Olympics.

Traditionally, the province-wide run is held in a spot for athletes across Saskatchewan to meet up. However, the in-person event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, a ‘virtual’ Torch Run is being conducted, where athletes track their kilometres obtained by running, walking, cycling, or with gym equipment. The goal is 2,400 km by May 31.

Melfort Special Olympics Coach Carl Kruger said they have eight athletes participating in the virtual run.

“It gives them some activity to join and participate in,” Kruger said. “[The pandemic] has been hard on the athletes. Special Olympics is a social event for most of them. It’s definitely been hard on them not getting out as much as they normally do.”

As of Saturday, May 30, 1,750 km have been completed across the province. Special Olympics Saskatchewan is accepting donations until May 31 when they hope to reach the 2,400 km plateau.
