The province’s Water Security Agency announced a series of water management infrastructure initiatives and programming on May 28 to support communities across Saskatchewan. The projects are part of the provincial government’s $7.5 billion two-year capital plan to stimulate Saskatchewan’s economic recovery. In total $8.3 million will be invested into six water management projects.

According to the Water Security Agency, Meadow Lake rural communities will see $1.5 million to advance agricultural water management projects which deal with issues such as erosion control, $600,000 for Rural Municipalities, Conservation and Development Area Authorities and Watershed Associations to clear natural channels of debris, sedimentation and general overgrowth and $500,000 for municipalities to conduct flood mapping to support long-term mitigation.

Gina Bernier, R.M.of Meadow Lake’s Chief Administrative Officer told meadowlakeNOW the funding is welcome to rural residents and the farming community.

“As far as $500,000 in flood mapping, could probably use that all,” Bernier said. “Council was in discussions and planning to start finding funds to complete a water drainage map and this funding would assist us in a lot of projects.”

Bernier said the immediate region is home to number of rivers and would assist with beaver dam’s frequently locking channels. Some of the water channels the R.M. is considering is the Nolan Creek and Meadow River.

“Right now we’re just listening to see what we’re going to get and considering how we’re going to utilize funding,” she said.

Bernier advised as the funding announcement develops, residence in the community will be updated as to when and where residence can apply.

Initial work on all the projects will begin immediately and are part of the province’s Growth Plan to build strong communities by investing $30 billion in infrastructure over the next decade.
