Work wrapping up on Habitat for Humanity home in Melfort

The newest Habitat for Humanity build in Melfort is nearing completion.

Work began last fall on the 1,000 sq. ft., three bedroom bungalow at 404 Burrows Ave. W.

Project manager Terry Thurrott told northeastNOW they have regained some momentum lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re in the final finishing stages of the house, siding is going on, and the interior finishes and trim [are] being installed,” Thurrott said. “We hope to have the family in the house by July 1.”

Thurrott said when COVID-19 hit, it threw off everyone’s schedule.

“We were waiting for some trades who don’t have the workers or we didn’t have enough information on it to get them in to work,” Thurrott explained.

He said the home features high-end quality, with all-weather windows and doors, laminate floors in the interior, and a nice design and layout.

“In a couple of weeks, when it’s finished, it will be a pretty little home,” Thurrott said.

He thanked all of the contractors that worked on the project, noting the challenges everyone faced with the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. The current build was started last October, which meant contractors were in short supply.

“A lot of [the contractors] had work that they had to finish off and that’s understandable,” Thurrott said. “The contractors that we did have on the project were tremendous, they did an excellent job, and thank you very much to them.”

Thurrott said he hoped to include even more of the contractor base during the next Habitat build, which has not yet been scheduled.
